UPPER SCHOOL

The Upper School, at our Westminster Presbyterian Church Campus, educates our 7th through 12th-graders. It is at the Upper School that we begin to prepare our students for life beyond the halls of LCS. We want each LCS graduate to be fully equipped to take their next step. To that end, our curriculum is geared toward providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their post-LCS endeavors, all the while fostering a faith that gives all glory to God.

program of studies

The Upper School curriculum introduces our 7th through 12th graders to advanced concepts in mathematics, science, history, and language arts. We also explore the deeper themes of the Bible and impress upon students the truth of the Gospel and how it relates to the secular world. For those who are college bound, we offer advanced placement classes that provide the framework for a post-secondary education. Service is also a key component of our curriculum. We want to encourage our students to pursue a life of Christian service, which starts with the student body and extends to the local community and beyond.

  • We build upon our Lower School math foundation and begin exploring the more advanced concepts, starting with 7th Grade Pre-Algebra, followed by 8th and 9th Grade Algebra. Students start taking Geometry in the 9th grade, as they begin preparation for college acceptance testing and more advanced math classes.

In 10th and 11th grades, Algebra II is taught for two years, finishing with Senior Math and a survey of all of the math topics learned to prepare seniors for mathematics at the college level.

  • Students desiring to study mathematics in preparation for college or a career driven largely by numbers will be able to take Intermediate College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Honors Calculus.

  • Starting with our 7th Grade Life Science class, students starting building a scientific framework through the study of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, biotechnology, origins, classifications, ecology, and human anatomy and physiology. The 8th Grade Earth and Space Science class explores the highest mountains the deepest oceans, learning about our world. It is in these two classes that students begin exploring the vast richness of the sciences and how they relate to a Biblical worldview.

  • As our students progress further in their education, they are learning more about the science of our world through the Biology I and Biology II classes, but also exploring the philosophies of science in relation to God’s word. We also offer Physical Science, Anatomy and Physiology, and Physics for our students to further explore more advanced sciences.

  • The study of History at the Upper School is a deeper look into the course of civilization, as ordained by God. Starting with 7th Grade World Studies and the subsequent courses (8th Grade American History, 9th Grade History, 10th Grade World History, and 11th Grade U.S. History), students learn about the successes and failures of the past. Our 12th Grade History program includes a semester of American Government and a semester of Economics to educate students about the impact of those two subjects in their daily lives.

  • We want our students to grow in their knowledge of the English language, with a heart towards communicating the wonders of God to our fellow man. All of our students will take classes aimed at increasing their working knowledge of grammar and composition. We also begin offering Pre-AP classes in 9th and 10th grades, transitioning to AP courses in 11th and 12th grades.

  • Immersion in God’s Word is a key component of the Christian Faith and is also one of the cornerstones of the Upper School curriculum. Our Students will complete an in-depth study of the Bible as they are slowly introduced to the challenges faced by Christians from other beliefs and practices. We also have a weekly school-wide chapel service that shows our students to the importance of worship with fellow believers.

  • We believe that the Church is made up of people from ethnicities all across our world. Learning foreign languages connects our students to cultures from different parts of the globe, as well as preparing them for foreign missions. LCS offers both French and Spanish at the Upper School.

  • Each student will be able to participate in a number of electives and organizations. We want to honor God through our diversity of interests by offering unique classes and promoting the participation by students in clubs or organizations. LCS offers the following to our Upper School students: Computer Discovery, Physical Education, Journalism, Speech & Debate, Yearbook, Quiz Bowl, Robotics Team, and Student Council.

  • Laurel Christian School offers Advanced Placement (AP) classes for our students looking to earn college credit. Currently, LCS offers AP US History, AP Calculus, and AP English.
